DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS (Academy of Communication and Media Arts)

The Academy of Communication and Media Arts (ACMA) mission is to offer students an exciting and rigorous curriculum that will provide experiences in a broad spectrum of media. It is one of two programs at New Dorp High School that has been accredited by the NYS Education Department to offer a Career and Technical Education [CTE] endorsement on the Regents Diploma. To receive this prestigious endorsement, students must complete several demanding components, including the approved three year course of study in Digital Communications and the comprehensive technical assessment.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in television production, study the techniques of effective journalism, learn how to film and edit short movies and videos, as well as learn how to take an idea and develop a script that will bring that concept to life on screen. As seniors, students will have the technical background and experience to qualify for internships, as well as to work on special projects with partner organizations.

New York City is the media capital of the universe. Students interested in the world of communication and media arts have an endless supply of career and post-secondary opportunities available to them in the metropolitan area. The goal of ACMA is to provide an experience rich in fundamental knowledge for students whose future plans may include joining the exciting and expanding world of multimedia.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP (Corporate Center for Business & Technology)

The Corporate Center for Business & Technology (Corporate) is designed to prepare students with the skills needed for success in college and the workplace through coursework combining, technology, business, and academics. Students are provided with three full years of content specific from the nationally-recognized program, Virtual Enterprise.

The Virtual Enterprise program "is an in-school, live, global business simulation that offers students a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning and the development of 21st-century skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem solving, communication, personal finance and technology." It is one of two programs at New Dorp High School that has been accredited by the NYS Education Department to offer a Career and Technical Education [CTE] endorsement on the Regents Diploma. To receive this prestigious endorsement, students must complete several demanding components, including the approved three year course of study in Entrepreneurship and the comprehensive technical assessment.

For the CTE approved three-year business sequence, students learn how to use business software, such as Microsoft Office in real-world situations. They study business concepts, such as accounting, marketing, and finance, and participate in our Award-Winning Virtual Enterprise program.

In our Nationally Ranked Virtual Enterprise (VE) Program, students work in a simulated business environment that provides real-world training for business careers. Students may participate in various competitions and events, including representing New Dorp HS at trade fairs in California, Tennessee, and Germany. Internships, scholarships, and college level courses are also available to VE students. (https://veinternational.org/)

FORENSIC SCIENCE (The Institute of Forensic Science & Criminology)

The Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology will prepare students for college and career readiness through a sequence of rigorous coursework which will instill a lifelong love of learning in each and every member of our smaller learning community. As a result, students will develop social awareness that engenders them to be good citizens, contributing to academia and the community at large. In 2016, our Forensic Science program received NYC approval to begin the approval process in order to certify our program by the NYS Education Department. Forensic Science will become our third accredited program to offer a Career and Technical Education [CTE] endorsement on the Regents Diploma

The Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology provides students with the coursework, internships, and experiences necessary to prepare them for college while exposing them to the skills needed to begin careers as law enforcement officers, forensic scientists, chemists, or biological scientists. Core skills will provide a breadth of knowledge with wide-ranging applications. Members of the smaller learning community will also develop their unique skills and talents in an atmosphere that fosters academic excellence and high expectations for success.
