The Institute of Health Sciences

The Institute of Health Sciences is an academically rigorous program that will prepare students for college as well as careers in the health science profession. As a member of the Institute of Health Sciences, students will develop academic skills, practical skills, and attitudes to enable them to be successful lifelong learners and productive responsible citizens in a diverse society. Some of the potential careers may include doctors, nurses, physicians assistants, athletic trainers, physical and occupational therapists, medical technologists, and medical assistants.

Intellectual growth will be fostered through a diverse curriculum, while integrating health and science related courses. Our electives will provide students with the knowledge and necessary skills for a future in the healthcare profession.

With challenging courses and unique learning opportunities, our program offers students a head start as they prepare for college as well as a potential health related career. Students begin their journey with an Introduction to Health Sciences class where the will learn about cutting edge research on health related topics. Sophomore year, they will discover how the human body works in Anatomy. Junior year, students will take Rehab Science and Medical Practice, which is designed to help them develop a general awareness of health careers and specific preparation for medical occupations. Building on the knowledge base each year students will learn how to respond to physical and mental health first aid emergencies. Instruction will also be given in addressing breathing, and cardiac emergencies as participants will have the chance to earn a certificate of Adult First Aid/CPR/AED. Senior year students will delve into the inner workings of the mind in Psychology where they will also have the opportunity to receive certification in youth mental health first aid.

Competitive senior internships will focus on physical therapy, sports rehabilitation, assessing human movement and body mechanics, as well as assisting and creating individual rehabilitation plans. Students will work closely with New York State Board Certified orthopedic therapists, strength and conditioning specialists, and physical therapists.

Our institute has established a partnership with One on One Sports Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Center, The College of Staten Island. Students will have the opportunity to work “hands on” with trained professionals at school sporting events and on-site at partnering facilities.
