This past January, several NDHS senior classes wrote e-mails to Borough President Oddo as part of a Civic Engagement Project for their government class. Each senior researched various topics, including: bullying/cyberbullying, teen suicide, the S.I. drug epidemic, stigmas associated with mental health illness, and LGBTQ issues/competency/safety, and racism/hate crimes.
Students were invited to Borough Hall to meet with BP Oddo to discuss the issues they researched and e-mailed him about. They prepared questions for him, engaging in over an hour long discussion revolving around these core issues affecting them and our Staten Island community. The students shed light on some of these issues by proposing solutions. When asked by BP Oddo what they think would be some next steps, several students mentioned the Peer Group Connection Program at New Dorp. This beneficial program and more programs like it throughout the island, would help assist the youth as they combat the issues mentioned in the meeting.
The students were enthralled and enlightened by the visit.
