Overview
The Math & Science Institute
The Math and Science Institute, New Dorp High School’s only screened program, has been in existence for over 30 years. Our STEAM program prepares motivated students to achieve success throughout high school. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Our coursework supports all students with obtaining an Advanced Regents Diploma, which readies them for acceptance into prestigious colleges and universities. Students take 4 years of English, Social Studies, Math & Science including Chemistry & Physics. Past alumni have gone on to pursue STEAM-related careers such as physician, pharmacist, computer scientist, graphic designer, or engineer.
Course offerings:
Description of our elective course offerings:
9th – STEM Research Seminar:
This course has been developed to give students a well rounded view of what it means to study STEM. Students will be introduced to careers in the STEM field, explore colleges and programs which prepare students for STEM related futures, and help students build preliminary skills needed for STEM research. By the end of their freshmen year they will also have the prerequisite skills needed to take science research in their junior or senior year.
10th – Engineering Drawing:
Engineering Draw & Digital Design
This course is a broad introduction to mechanical design using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools. Emphasis is placed on a thorough understanding of projection principles and the visualization of exact space conditions relevant to 3D modeling. Students will learn 3D design, website design, animation design, and game design using SketchUP, HTML/CSS, and Scratch/JavaScript.
11th – Anatomy & Physiology:
Anatomy & Physiology is a rigorous course based on a college level curriculum. Students learn about the body systems and apply their knowledge to solve medical case studies. Former students that have gone on to careers in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and other health related professions have communicated that the Anatomy & Physiology class gave them a strong foundation for their studies in higher education.
11th – Engineering Design:
Engineering Design course introduces students to the foundation of mechanical and electrical engineering in an interactive and hands-on classroom. Students create projects that are built based on their own innovative ideas, where they have the freedom to make their own choices and decisions.
12th – Science Research:
The goal of science research is to deconstruct and demystify the research process both in and out of the laboratory, so students experience the world with a greater depth of understanding. In this course, students will use primary journal articles to investigate current research in their chosen field of interest and compose complex college-level papers to reflect their own research as well as the research of others. They will use this background information to construct an original hypothesis and research plan and collect data which culminates in a final research project.
12th – AP Computer Science A:
Computer science is all about solving real-world problems. AP Computer Science A is an introductory college-level computer science course. Students cultivate their understanding of coding through analyzing, writing, and testing code as they explore concepts like modularity, variables, and control structures.
12th – AP Computer Science Principles:
Computer Science inspires and challenges students to explore how computing and technology impact the world. AP Computer Science Principles is an introductory college-level computing course. Students cultivate their understanding of computer science through working with data, collaborating to solve problems, and developing computer programs as they explore concepts like creativity, abstraction, data and information, algorithms, programming, the internet, and the global impact of computing.
12th – AP Biology:
AP Biology is a college-level biology course. Students cultivate their understanding of biology through inquiry-based investigations as they explore topics like evolution, energetics, information storage and transfer, and system interactions.
Our college level course offerings include:
- AP English Literature - College Extension English
- AP Global History - College Ext. US History & Gov’t
- AP US History - College Ext. Gov’t & Economics
- AP Statistics - AP Calculus AB & BC
- College Ext. Spanish or Italian
Additional Requirements: A minimum of five college level courses.
