The Law Institute

The Law Institute is an outstanding academic program that focuses on the study of law, government, politics, and historical leaders and events. Our program’s electives focus on various types of law, including criminal law, civil law, and constitutional law. Currently, students have the opportunity to take:

  • 9th grade: Introduction to Law
  • 10th grade: Criminology & Criminal Justice
  • 11th grade: Legal Writing, Mock Trial, and Internships (students must apply)
  • 12th grade: Constitutional Law & Internships (students must apply)

Students in the Law Institute have the opportunity to visit local and federal courts, work directly with lawyers, judges, and politicians, and participate in moot court and mock trial competitions throughout the city.  Law firms and attorneys personally mentor our students.  Students in the Law Institute regularly practice research, legal writing, and public speaking skills in our own model courtroom.

The Law Institute is sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and partnered with the Justice Resource Center. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is a nonprofit organization that supports the study and love of American History.  The Gilder Lehrman Institue provides our students a wide range of programs and resources, including historical documents, exhibitions, and funding for trips. The Gilder Lehrman Institute also funds our Saturday School Academy that allows students to take SAT preparation and a variety of enriching electives that are not offered during the regular school day.

Air Force JROTC Program

The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (AFJROTC) is a congressionally mandated program with a mission to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.   The AFJROTC program is grounded in the Air Force core values of “integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.”  Classroom instruction includes aerospace science (40%) and leadership development (40%), along with a focus on physical fitness and overall health and wellness (20%).  The program trains cadets in citizenship, promotes community service, and instills personal responsibility, character, and self-discipline.  The importance of “service” to each other, schools, communities, and ultimately our nation is a key component of the program.  Unique military and non-military scholarship opportunities are also available for AFJROTC students.

New Dorp High School has also been approved for the first and only Aviation Honors Ground School (AHGS) Program in New York City.  AFJROTC fully funds this program for high-performing students who are interested in the aerospace industry and/or a career as a pilot.  Eligible students will have the opportunity to fly drones and take flight lessons with a licensed instructor.  Students will also be prepared for and take the Federal Aviation Administration’s written certification exams.

In this program, each cadet will be driven to achieve and maintain high academic, leadership, management, community service, and physical fitness standards.  The Air Force and New Dorp High School will provide each student with everything he/she needs in the core elements of our program with the only cost being the routine cleaning of the uniform.  Please note that AFJROTC cadets are never under any obligation to join the military after high school.
